My Awe-Inspiring Research Competition

By Carissa, G12

Scientist from all over Indonesia are invited to submit their work and participate in the i3L Indonesia Life Science Research competition and I was encouraged by my teacher to participate in the program.

On 27th August 2016, all my hard work was paid off when I won the first place in the Environmental Science category! This allowed me to compete in the national round, the “Lomba Peneliti Belia 2016” competition on November 18-19th. Out of the 55 participants, I can’t believe I won the Special Award! My research was entitled, “The Utilization of Sludge from the Fish Industry as an Organic fertilizer.”

I was inspired to pursue this research because I am very concerned that 6.5 million tonnes of fish waste are dumped into the sea each year, destroying the ecosystem. After weeks of research and testing, I was amazed to find out that the utilization of this sludge showed positive effects on plants when used as an organic fertilizer!

Isn’t it surprising to know that selling this waste as an organic fertilizer will bring 3 times more profit rather than using it as a fish meal? I hope that one day, the results of this research will benefit Indonesia not just environmentally but also economically as well towards a sustainable future.

Overall, it was an unbelievable experience! I truly encourage everyone reading this to grab whatever opportunity you can. Joining competitions isn't only about winning or losing, it allows you to feel the “outside world”, make new friends, and learn to be more confident and especially to use your talent given by God! I want to thank all my teachers especially Mrs Charina Valente, my Research and Science coach, who has guided and believed in me throughout this whole process. Likely I am truly grateful to my friends and family who have supported me throughout this process. Please, do pray for me as I represent Indonesia in the International round of competition in ICYS in Germany or APCYS in Nepal!

I am excited but I am not worried as I am guided by this verse, “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31
